Placenta Services

Proud of the high standard of practice, Birth Twin Cities prepares and encapsulates your placenta in a dedicated at home stainless steel kitchen workspace. Following the most stringent OSHA & EPA guidelines for proper food safety preparation and blood borne pathogen protocols, you can be assured your placenta is properly prepared and created into a quality grade product for consumption.

History

The process of consuming your placenta may be a new or strange concept to some, but is a practice with a centuries-long history unique to different cultural practices globally. The placenta is a powerful organ that nourished a baby from a few cells to an amazing little human. Once the baby arrives, many believe the placenta can offer one final benefit – a huge nutrient boost to the new mom.  Many people who have ingested their placenta post-birth have reported increased and better-regulated milk supply, increased energy, regulation and balance of hormones and a decrease of postpartum depression.

Methods

There are two main ways to encapsulate your placenta – the Raw Prep Method and the Traditional Chinese Steam Method. Raw Prep Method is known for increased milk production and energy, while Traditional Method is known for warming the body, healing and regulating hormones. You will receive about ⅓  more capsules with the Raw Prep Method as the herbal steaming process with the Traditional Method shrinks the placenta. We also can provide cord keepsakes, prints, and tinctures as additional add-ons you may choose for your customized postpartum package.  The tincture is one way to extend the benefits of placenta consumption.

Placenta Encapsulation Reservation

Birth Twin Cities will pick up your placenta at an agreed upon time and return the capsules within 72 hours. The full payment is due at the time of reserving service. If there are additional add-ons or a different bundle not listed please send a message and we will get you set up!

*Traditional Steam Method is cleaned, steamed with ginger, hot pepper, and lemon before dehydrating and prepared into capsules. It is most known for warming the body, healing and regulating hormones/mood.

**Raw Prep Method is cleaned then dehydrated and prepared into capsules. It is most known for increased energy and milk production. This method will yield more capsules.

***The 90 minute lactation and/or CST session will occur at the same time as the drop off of your placenta pills at your home so please allow an extra day or so in the expected return time of the placenta pills. This session is customized to you and your infant's specific needs post birth for the perfect body work and lactation support combo that is so helpful that delicate first week of baby's life.

Care Instructions

Tell your provider beforehand that you intend to keep your placenta. Assign someone on your birth team to be responsible for it following delivery so that it isn’t accidentally discarded. If your placenta is sent off to pathology it will no longer be eligible for consumption, if testing is requested, you may have your care team cut off a small piece to be sent to pathology so the rest your placenta can be saved for encapsulation. Please let me know if there are any issues or questions about saving your placenta.

It is your responsibility to notify me after the birth (ideally within 24 hours) to make pickup/drop off arrangements. The sooner the better. Notification (text/email/call) and pick up hours are between 9am and 10pm daily. Please ensure your placenta is kept fresh. Placenta needs to be double bagged in ziplock storage bags and placed on ice in a cooler or refrigerated within 4 hours.  Your hospital may provide a cooler or plastic storage bin if you forget one. There will be curbside pickup and door delivery when applicable.

Please note- Refunds are only given if the placenta is ineligible for consumption based on an active infection. It is your responsibility to reach out at time of birth if you have questions about a change in your eligibility for encapsulation. It is very rare for a placenta to no longer be eligible for consumption, but again, please reach out of confirm.

How Does It Work?

  • The first step is to reach out to Birth Twin Cities to book your spot during the month of your baby’s anticipated arrival. An electronic contract will be sent to you along with an invoice after the contract is completed with your selections. You may also book directly online. Last minute and day of birth bookings are accepted as long as placenta has been kept cool.

  • Once you are at your birth location, be sure to discuss with your birth team that you plan to save your placenta so that it’s not accidentally discarded after delivery.

  • Please bring a small cooler and two gallon sized plastic bags. Once the placenta is delivered it can be double bagged, placed in cooler, and filled with ice. The placenta must be kept fresh in order to be safe for consumption.

  • A heads up via text/email/call while in labor/planned induction/cesarean is helpful but not necessary. If a cooler is forgotten, please inform Birth Twin Cities at this time so that one can be provided at pick up.

  • Notification and pickup hours are between 8am and 10pm daily with 1 hour time frames for arrival.

  • After delivery, please have a member of your birth team reach out to Birth Twin Cities to inform that the placenta is ready for pick up.

  • A member of Birth Twin Cities will do a curbside pick up of the cooler with the placenta within 24 hours of notification of birth. The prepared and encapsulated placenta along with the family’s cooler will be returned within 24-72 hours. Consumption of the placenta capsules can begin immediately after delivery!

What People Are Saying About Placenta Encapsulation

“Ariel from Birth Twin Cities is a remarkable woman with a heart and passion for helping mamas through their pregnancy journey. She did my placenta encapsulation and included an unexpected keepsake of the cord for us to keep! Even before giving birth she was incredibly knowledgeable through my pregnancy and supportive when the journey was hard. There is no one else I could imagine going to during such a precious, sometimes scary, and emotional time while waiting to bring my baby into the world. I love that she shares helpful tips and tricks and I utilized dates at the end of my pregnancy when she shared some stats of how helpful they can be for easier labor. She carries herself both professionally and gracefully while working with you. I would highly recommend to any mama to be to follow her posts and use her for placenta encapsulation!”
